Whitetail spider bites are so last year

The information below was sent to me by email, but I am assured by a real life person (I pinched to check) who knows someone (who also knows someone) that the email is not a hoax, the information is true and very serious.  I’m posting it here for you cos I want to warn you, but mostly, because I want to gross you out.  And, you will be grossed out, believe me.

Watch out for this bitey bugger.  If you see this spider, do not touch it and contact MAF immediately.

Uncle Google and Dermnet NZ say this is a Brown Recluse Spider

Please forward this around to your Landscapers.

This spider was found at Botany (Eastern Suburbs) and this gentlemans hand is 2 weeks old. He has been advised to stay well clear of this spider, if you recognise this spider from the picture leave it alone and contact MAF immediately.

The pics get ickier.  Click after the jump if you can handle the septic jandal.

Update: Some clever readers have discovered that these pictures have been circulating since 2003!  So, despite my real life bod telling me it’s true, it looks like it may be a hoax.

  1. mt son got bitten twice on the same leg by a whitetail and it looked nothing like that. he did get sick and ended up in hospital but it only looked like the fisrt picture…something to ponder.

  2. Thanks Jodz, terrible news about your son, I hope he is ok now.

I think the email was meaning that there was a ‘new’ spider in NZ (not a whitetail) but it all seems to be a hoax.

  3. It shows the reaction of a Recluse Spider bite over 10 days. It is an extreme reaction, as most of these bites do heal over a few months.

However the Brown Recluse is a North American spider and not in NZ.

PS the photos where first seen around June 2003 in America, so not Auckland as the hoax suggests.

  4. we live in south auckland and have not seen too many in my time here except over the past few days they have been comming in in droves. fly spray does not kill them all it does is make them angrier and more angry on top of that. they start to make for you and hunt you. its like blood to a pit bull. these spiders are the pitbull of the spider family an very scary to have around when you have little children.
get your house professionally sprayed it seems to keep them out of the house and they die on first touch of the wall.

  5. what has the doctor said. that is sick

  6. This article explains what you need to know

  7. I got a bite started same as one above ,now going to emergency every day for antibiotics .Read

  8. NO ONE KNOWS IF WHITE TAIL HAS INFECTOUS BUG ON IT OR THAT THE BITE CAUSES AN OUTSIDE BACTERIA TO ENTER EASILY.AND DONT BE FOOLED INTO THE FACT THAT THE FANG MARKS ARE TO BIG TO BE A SMALL SPIDER ITS THE SWELLING AND INFECTION I RECKON .READ A FEW STUDIES BUT CAN NOT SEE ANY SWABS BEEN DONE ON SPIDERS FOR BACTERIA KEEP CLEAN AND SEE DOCTOR

  9. That looks like necrotizing fasciitis or better known as “flesh eating disease.” Google it

  10. we live in Cromwell an my mum uses Budget fly spray to kill white tails for some strang reason it works she has heaps in her house in the summer/spring months

  11. I currently have a whitetail bite on my right bicep. I have had it for 5 days but have been advised strongly to seek medical advice. I have learnt so far that the whitetails venom causes a flesh eating affect starting under the skin, what you see on the skin is not the worst part, like the tip of and iceburg. I too thought it was a pimple at first but i now have a large dark bruise bigger than the bottom of a beer bottle. If you even expect that you could have recieved one of these nasty bites seek medical advice ASAP, i have already left it way too late.

  12. fake photos, old story, needless hysteria. The facts are that there is NO record of a whitetail bite ever causing a major skin crisis in either NZ or Australia (the whitetail’s home country) Stop spreading false stories and frightening people who are easily led, as for Lily’s story, come off it girl, you are just attention seeking and scare mongering.

  13. sorry Chris but i don’t agree. i last year got bitten by a white tail spider and suffered from it for 6 months in pain and leaving nasty scars.
my 9 year old son was bitten 3 weeks ago and has been in hospital with nothing they can do apart from antibiotics. i have a pic of this mass it has left on his hip and really wish i can post it because it aint nice. lily is right to say seek medical advice as ppl have different reactions to the venom.

  14. Apparently the white tail is not venomous, it is just aggressive.
It feeds off other spiders and therefore when we get bitten, the infection can be due to whatever spider residue is still on the fangs of this little bugger. I got bit 4 days ago and it tracked up my arm. Just got back from White-Cross where I needed antibiotics via a drip. Have to go again tomorrow.
